Does Quebec still disproportionately influence everything from federal spending to defence policy?

URC Investigates tackles the prickliest of political topics by combining video clips from documentaries and informed, intelligent debate with live studio guests. Host Mercedes Stephenson is joined each week by Canada’s leading public policy experts, business leaders and top political thinkers, to take on the issues that matter most to Canadians.

This season, the URC Investigates challenges viewers to take a broad look at Canada from both sides of our borders.

From news media to health care, from our shrinking military to the highest political office in the land, URCI will examine a variety of important issues and explore how they impact on Canadians today.

The 2007-08 season opens with an in-depth look at the news media – at home and abroad. “Political Pack Journalism” examines journalism in the political arena, while “Media Wars” looks at news coverage in the most dangerous places on the planet.

The URC Investigates      Panel     Why Canada Fights: Afghanistan

Our first documentary special, “Health Care: While We Wait”, takes a controversial look at Canada’s health care system. With politicians claiming waiting times must be shortened, and spending nearly 50% of every provincial tax dollar to do so, are things getting better … or worse?

We’ll also dedicate six episodes to examine Canada’s often contentious relationship with the United States.  “The Ambassadors” (2-parts),  “America: Friend or Guardian?”,  “The Border”, “American Invasion” and “Canada’s Third Way” cover everything from our diplomatic views and security issues, to trade policy and life next door to the world’s only superpower.

In addition, we’ll explore the real work of government with “Disorder in the House?” a special on Canada’s Parliament, and expand the discussion with our panels in “The All-Mighty Prime Minister”, “The Quebec Conundrum” and “MPs: Benchwarmers or Players?”.  Our episode, “Security Scares: Real or Imagined?” reviews public safety from border controls to the way Canada prepares for national emergencies and disasters.  And we’ll continue to study Canada’s military with the documentary special “Officers & Ivory Towers” which explores the impact the Canadian Officer Training Corps program had on six highly respected Canadians.  Canada’s military and aid work will be reviewed in “Afghanistan: The Road Ahead”, and we’ll look at the cultural differences Canada, the U.K. and the U.S. have in regards to the military with “Soldiers in our Midst” and “Boots on the Ground.”

Always informative and entertaining, join Mercedes Stephenson and the URC Investigates each Monday night at 9:00pm and Sunday night at 10:00pm on the ichannel.
